Montecatini Terme - The Hidden Gem of Northern Tuscany

Montecatini Terme is a charming small town located in the northern part of Tuscany between Florence and Pisa. The town itself was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2021 for its historical and cultural significance and is best known for its healing thermal waters, a tradition that dates back centuries.
This hidden gem surely deserves a visit, with a wide range of things to do. It’s also worth remembering that it’s the perfect location for a longer stay, as it’s ideally positioned for easy exploration of nearby cities like Pistoia, Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Viareggio.
Things to Do in Montecatini Terme
Stroll Through Parco delle Terme & Visit Terme Tettuccio
Take a walk down the Parco delle Terme, a beautiful park with Montecatini most known landmark the Terme Tettuccio. Unlike the traditional spas, Terme Tettuccio isn’t for swimming - it’s a “drinking spa”, visitors can enjoy a mineral-rich thermal water that is believed to have therapeutic benefits.
However, if you are not interested in trying the thermal water the place is still worth the visit. For a €6 entrance fee you can explore the interiors of what once was one of Italy’s most stunning thermal complexes. The place is run down a bit by time but the ornate column, grand fountain and the architecture of the place still make it a worthwhile experience.

Ride the Montecatini Funicular to Montecatini Alto
The vintage red cable car, a perfect experience for both children and adults, has been running since 1898 Gigio & Gigia (the funiculars’ nicknames) offer a slow, absolutely beautiful ride up to Montecatini Alto, a small village perched above the town. The view from the Montecatini Alto is breathtaking, giving you a panoramic view over the Montecatini Terme and nearby towns. Best time for this amazing ride is around sunset, when you can watch the sun slowly disappear behind the mountains while admiring the panoramic view. Afterwards take a walk in the village, perhaps treat yourself to a nice glass of wine or coffee and as the darkness falls watch the lights of Montecatini Terme twinkle below creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Funicular Opening Times: Daily from 9:30 AM to 12:00 AM, with departures every 30 minutes.

Discover the Charm of Montecatini’s Center
In the very center of the town Montecatini Terme has a bit of a fairytale-like charm, an old-fashioned carousel sitting against a backdrop of Tuscan hills. Whether you’re traveling with kids or just love a touch of nostalgia with a beautiful view, it’s a perfect addition to the town’s relaxed and charming vibe.
Cibus – The Best Pici all’Aglione in Town
Food in Italy is a very unique, one of a kind experience and Cibus pici all’aglione is a must try if you are visiting the town. A traditional tuscan dish - thick, hand-rolled pasta in a rich tomato sauce infused with aglione - a giant, mild garlic variety unique to the region (also known as elephant garlic). The flavours were bold yet perfectly balanced and I can’t recommend it enough!

New York Restaurant – A Unique Twist in Montecatini
Although it might seem unexpected, but the New Your Bar in Montecatini Terme is worth stopping by. We treated ourselves to a late night tiramisu and panna cotta desserts, both of which were really good, but I recommend this place mainly due to its unique striking contrast against the traditional Italian streetscape, it’s a spot that adds a modern touch to Montecatini’s classic charm.
History, culture, wellness and breathtaking views - Montecatini Terme is the kind of place that surprises you. Wherever you are considering Montecatini Terme for a day trip or a longer stay due to its perfect location I would highly recommend adding it to your itinerary for your next Italian adventure.
